Clog mules, wood, cork and platform

A clog is a mule on a thick, shaped base. It is the sturdiest backless shoe and the one most people reach for in fall.

The short answer

Choose the base first: cork footbeds (like the Birkenstock Boston) mold to your foot over time, wood or rocker soles (like Dansko) are firm and built for standing, and platform clogs add height. Then pick the upper: suede for fall, leather for wet days, a buckle strap if you want adjustability.

How clogs should fit

Clogs fit differently from fashion mules. Dansko’s size guide says a clog may feel slightly snug as you step in, your toes should not touch the front, and your heel should move up and down freely as you walk. Dansko sizes in EU whole sizes; if you are a half size, compare the US range for each EU size on its chart. Birkenstock describes the Boston as true to size with a roomier fit than many fashion shoes, per Gulf News.

Clogs through the seasons

Suede clogs with socks are a fall and winter staple. For colder days, shearling-lined versions of several clogs exist; see fur lined mules. In spring, swap to leather and wear them with cropped trousers and bare ankles.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between clogs and mules?

A clog is defined by its thick, contoured base, traditionally wood. A mule is defined by its open back. Most fashion clogs are backless, so most clogs are also mules.

Are clogs good for standing all day?

Many people who stand at work wear clogs. Dansko’s Professional clog, for example, has a rocker bottom and its stapled outsole carries the APMA Seal of Acceptance, per Dansko. Comfort still depends on fit.

How should clogs fit?

Dansko’s size guide says the fit may feel slightly snug when you step in, toes should not touch the front, and the heel should move up and down freely as you walk.
