The short answer
Check the listing for the lining material (shearling, wool blend or a textile faux fur) and the outsole (rubber or a firm EVA for outdoors, soft soles for indoors only). Shearling-lined versions of the Birkenstock Boston exist, and UGG’s Goldenstar clog comes in versions with different linings, so read each listing.

Mule linings
| Lining | What it is | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Shearling | Sheepskin with the wool on | Warm, breathable, a premium price |
| Wool blend | Wool mixed with other fibers | Warm; feel varies |
| Faux fur or fleece | A textile, often polyester | Lower cost, animal free, can mat over time |
The same model can come with different linings. UGG’s Goldenstar clog, for example, is listed with a textile recycled polyester lining at DSW, while some variants are sold with sheepskin. Read the materials line on the exact listing.

Indoor or outdoor?
- Outdoor-ready: rubber or firm molded soles with tread, a treated suede or leather upper.
- Indoor first: soft fabric or thin foam soles. Fine for the house, not for wet pavements.
- Suede and snow: do not mix. Treat suede with protector (see suede care) and keep lined suede mules for dry days.
Styling lined mules
Lined mules look most deliberate with simple, relaxed clothes: straight jeans or knit trousers, a long cardigan or a wool coat. Chunky socks under a lined clog is a look of its own. More in how to wear mules.
Questions people ask
Are fur lined mules warm enough for winter?
For indoors and short trips on dry days, yes. The open back lets cold air in and the uppers are rarely waterproof, so they are not a replacement for boots in snow.
What is the difference between shearling and faux fur?
Shearling is sheepskin with the wool left on. Faux fur and fleece linings are textiles, often polyester. Shearling tends to breathe and regulate temperature well; textile linings cost less and are animal free.
Should fur lined mules fit snug?
A plush lining compresses over the first weeks of wear, so a snug start is normal. If you plan to wear socks, try them on with socks.
